How to Get Tee Times at the Pinehurst Area Courses Everyone Actually Plays

Including how we beat Tobacco Road's own waitlist — a real trip, a few weeks ago

"Pinehurst" usually means the resort's own numbered courses (No. 2 and friends), most of which require being a member or resort guest to book. This post isn't about those. It's about the courses everyone staying in the area actually ends up playing — Tobacco Road, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Southern Pines, and Tot Hill Farm — which are open to the public and just as competitive to book during trip season.

A few buddies and I took a trip down to that area a few weeks back. Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Tot Hill Farm were all on the short list, but the course the whole trip got built around was Tobacco Road — if you've played it, you already know why; if you haven't, you've probably at least heard it's one of the weirdest, most love-it-or-hate-it, fully-booked courses in American golf.

Tobacco Road was sold out for the dates we wanted. The course runs its own official waitlist through a platform called Noteefy — you put in your dates, group size, and preferred times, and it texts you if a cancellation opens one up. It's a legitimately solid system, and it's the one the course itself tells you to use.

I signed up for Noteefy like anyone would. I also had TeeSignal — my own app — running an alert for the exact same dates and group size, watching the same public tee sheet.

TeeSignal got there first. Twice.

Twice on that trip, TeeSignal's text landed before Noteefy's did. Not by much — a few minutes each time — but at Tobacco Road, a few minutes is the whole ballgame. We ended up with two tee times there because of it. We also used TeeSignal to land our Southern Pines round on the same trip, no drama, just an alert that fired and a booking that went through.

I'm not trying to trash Noteefy here — it's a good tool and a lot of courses lean on it well. The honest takeaway is simpler than "mine is better": when two systems are watching the exact same public availability, whichever one checks faster wins, and that's the golfer who gets the time. That's just how polling works, regardless of whose logo is on it.

Why this matters past Tobacco Road

Everything in that corridor gets tight during trip season — Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Southern Pines, Tot Hill Farm, all of it. I haven't personally run every one of those down to a cancellation the way I did at Tobacco Road, but the logic doesn't change: set alerts for every course on your itinerary before you leave, and let something else do the refreshing instead of doing it yourself from a hotel room at 1am.

Tobacco Road

The centerpiece for most trips to the area, a Mike Strantz design that's as polarizing as it is good, and the hardest of the five to get into on short notice.

Southern Pines

The one we actually used TeeSignal to land ourselves on the same trip — no drama, just an alert that fired and a booking that went through.

Mid Pines & Pine Needles

The Donald Ross classics in the corridor, both part of the same lodge/resort operation, both popular enough that trip-season weekends go fast.

Tot Hill Farm

A quirkier, less-crowded option in the same area — still worth setting an alert for if it's on your itinerary, since availability isn't guaranteed either.

I also use TeeSignal weekly for Bethpage back home. If you're chasing a different hard-to-book course, here's what I know about Torrey Pines South, Chambers Bay, and TPC Scottsdale.
